Solar bikeway lighting for a critical path connection

As part of the Moreton Bay Cycleway, a new 600 metre shared path now connects the Schneider Road underpass at Eagle Farm with the existing bike lane and footpath at Viola Place within the Brisbane Airport precinct. While short in length, this link completes a safe and continuous off road cycling route to the Brisbane Airport area.

The path is used by both cyclists and pedestrians and improves connectivity along the Moreton Bay Cycleway. Given its location within the Brisbane Airport precinct, the project also needed to integrate with existing transport, aviation and public access infrastructure managed by Brisbane Airport Corporation. The works also included wayfinding signage, line marking, a kerb ramp at Viola Place, and a reconstructed weir with a new waterway crossing.

Project requirements

Brisbane City Council required a lighting solution that could support safe travel along the shared path at all hours and be delivered using solar powered lighting. The lighting needed to suit a bikeway application, integrate into the surrounding environment, and align with relevant pedestrian and cycling lighting requirements under AS NZS 1158.

With the path forming part of a key access corridor within the Brisbane Airport precinct, the lighting also needed to provide consistent performance suitable for a high use transport environment.

Solar lighting solution

Orca Solar Lighting provided the lighting design and carried out site specific engineering for the shared path. The solution comprised a combination of Vertex solar lighting systems selected to suit different site conditions along the route.

A Vertex master and slave system was specified for the area beneath the Gateway Bridge, where lighting continuity and performance were critical. Along the remainder of the path, twenty six Vertex SL solar lighting systems were installed to provide consistent illumination for cyclists and pedestrians.

The solar lighting supports safe movement along the path and meets the requirements of a shared pedestrian and cycling environment.

Installation

Installation was completed by Brisbane City Council, with the solar lighting systems supplied through CNW Bowen Hills as Orca’s wholesale partner. The off grid nature of the lighting allowed the works to proceed efficiently along the route.

This approach supported delivery of the project while maintaining access through the corridor during construction.

Outcome

The completed cycleway link provides a safe, convenient and direct off road connection for cyclists and pedestrians. It improves connectivity along the Moreton Bay Cycleway.

The solar lighting delivers consistent illumination along the shared path and contributes to a clean and well integrated infrastructure outcome. While the link itself is relatively short, it plays a vital role in completing the broader cycling network and supporting active transport across the precinct.

A special thank you to Brisbane Airport Corporation for the fantastic photos.
