Project overview
NSW Ports required a reliable lighting solution for a coastal pathway at Port Kembla, where exposure to salt, wind and marine conditions creates a challenging operating environment.
Existing solar bollards at the site had not performed over time in these conditions, highlighting the need for a more durable solution suited to coastal environments.
Project requirements
The lighting was required to provide reliable illumination along a coastal pathway while withstanding the environmental conditions associated with a marine location.
The solution needed to:
- Perform in a coastal environment with exposure to salt and moisture
- Provide consistent, all-night illumination
- Avoid the need for trenching and electrical infrastructure
- Offer long-term reliability suitable for an exposed installation
The previous bollards had failed within two years, reinforcing the need for a solution designed specifically for coastal conditions.
Solar lighting solution
Orca Solar Lighting supplied SBL2 Solar Bollard Lighting, designed for demanding outdoor environments including coastal and marine locations.
The bollards are Australian made and engineered for durability, with IP68 rated construction, a 10+ year design life and a 10-year warranty. The systems provide reliable, constant all-night illumination with a minimum of four full nights battery back-up.
The solar design avoided the need for trenching and cabling, which would have introduced significant cost across the length of the pathway.
Installation
Installation was completed by City Coast Services.
The self-contained solar bollard design allowed the lighting to be installed without connection to mains power, supporting efficient deployment along the coastal pathway.
Outcome
The completed installation provides a lighting solution suited to the coastal environment at Port Kembla.
The SBL2 solar bollards deliver consistent pathway illumination while withstanding ongoing exposure to salt and marine conditions. The system resolves the performance issues experienced with the previous bollards and provides a reliable, long-term outcome aligned with the site conditions.
