Solar pedestrian lighting for a sensitive public space

Goodwin Park is an active public park that also serves as an ANZAC memorial. The site is used by pedestrians, runners and active transport users and sits within the memorial precinct. Any lighting solution needed to respect the character and significance of the space while remaining functional for everyday community use.

Project requirements

City of Gold Coast required a lighting solution that could:

  • provide appropriate pedestrian lighting during evening and late night periods
  • support sustainability objectives
  • minimise installation impact in a public park setting
  • avoid disruption to the memorial and surrounding activiites
  • reduce impact on wildlife and park users

Solar lighting was identified as a suitable approach to meet these requirements while keeping installation complexity and costs down.

Solar lighting solution

Orca Solar Lighting supplied and installed Avero solar lighting systems configured with adaptive output levels across the evening. The systems were set to deliver higher pedestrian lighting levels during the early evening to support peak use, before stepping down to lower lighting levels later at night as activity reduces. This approach allows pedestrian lighting levels to be matched to site use across the evening while maintaining consistent light distribution.

Installation

Installation was completed by Krave Electrical. The off grid solar lighting solution enabled quick installation times without trenching or grid connection. This minimised disturbance to the park landscape and reduced disruption to park users during installation. This approach was particularly important given the site’s dual role as a public park and memorial space.

Outcome
The completed installation features two beautiful, uniform rows of solar light poles guiding visitors through the memorial precinct. The lighting integrates cleanly with the park environment, provides clear pedestrian guidance and maintains the character of the site while meeting functional lighting needs. The result is a solar lighting installation that performs reliably and suits the sensitivity of its surroundings.

A special thank you to City of Gold Coast for the fantastic photos.
