Project overview

As part of the Inland Rail Illabo to Stockinbingal project, a 350-person temporary workers’ accommodation facility was established in Stockinbingal to support major construction works between 2025 and 2027.

The facility includes a car park accommodating approximately 200 utility vehicles, requiring reliable lighting to support safe access and movement for site personnel within an active construction environment.

John Holland, delivering the works for Inland Rail, engaged Orca Solar Lighting to supply a solution suited to the temporary nature and operational demands of the site.

Project requirements

The lighting was required to support safe vehicle movement and access within a high-use car park servicing the accommodation facility.

The solution needed to:

  • Provide consistent illumination across a large vehicle area
  • Suit a temporary installation aligned with the project duration
  • Be practical to install without permanent electrical infrastructure
  • Integrate into an active construction environment

As the facility is temporary, the lighting also needed to support efficient removal at the end of the project and allow for future reuse.

Solar lighting solution

Orca Solar Lighting supplied 15 Vertex Customised Systems on 4.3t concrete blocks to illuminate the car park.

The systems were configured to suit the layout and usage requirements of the site, delivering consistent illumination across the vehicle area.

The off-grid solar design avoids the need for noisy diesel-powered lighting and allows the systems to operate independently of fixed electrical infrastructure.

Installation

Installation was carried out by John Holland as part of the broader project works.

The temporary, self-contained design of the lighting systems allowed them to be deployed without trenching or connection to mains power, supporting efficient installation within the construction environment.

Outcome

The completed installation provides a well-lit car park that supports safe vehicle movement and access for site personnel.

The solar lighting systems deliver consistent performance across the temporary facility and align with the operational requirements of a large-scale construction project.

As the accommodation facility is decommissioned following completion of the works, the lighting systems can be relocated and redeployed on future projects, extending their value beyond the initial installation and supporting ongoing project use.

A special thank you to John Holland for the great photos.
