Solar Lighting for The Spit’s $5.75m Park Upgrade

The $5.75 million upgrade of Doug Jennings Park has delivered a refreshed and more accessible coastal destination on The Spit.

Delivered through the Queensland Government’s Spit Works Program and led by the Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA), the project introduces new public spaces designed for recreation, community events and better access to the waterfront.

Designed by Tract Consultants and constructed by Regal Innovations, the revitalisation includes the creation of Seaway Green, new pedestrian and cycle paths, upgraded seating and picnic areas, and improved landscaping.

The works support the goals of the Spit Master Plan - protecting open space, improving access and strengthening the community’s connection to the coastline.

Lighting a Key Waterfront Pathway

A new pathway leading to the water required reliable lighting that could deliver safe, comfortable access at night without extensive civil works or grid infrastructure.

Orca Solar Lighting supplied four Vertex SL solar lighting systems for this pathway. The aim was to provide effective illumination while maintaining the open, natural character of the park. The lighting specification for this project was completed by PE Consulting Engineers.

Why Vertex SL Solar Lighting Was Selected

  1. Designed for Long-Term Performance

Vertex SL solar lighting is built for consistent, long-term operation in public spaces, providing councils with a reliable lighting solution that requires minimal intervention over its lifecycle.

  1. Reliable Light Output for Pathway Use

The system delivers uniform illumination suitable for pedestrian and shared-path movements, supporting visibility and comfort after sunset.

  1. Reliable and constant all-night light with 4+ nights battery back-up

Each system provides reliable illumination throughout the night and is supported by more than four nights of battery back-up, ensuring dependable operation during extended low-sunlight periods.

  1. No Grid Connection Required

The systems operate fully independently, avoiding trenching and underground cabling in open-space areas.

  1. Configured for the Site

Orca configured each system to suit the site, pathway layout and required lighting performance, ensuring an effective and balanced result.

Supporting a Renewed Public Space

The upgraded Doug Jennings Park and Seaway Green provide the community with new spaces to enjoy the coastline throughout the day and into the evening.

The solar lighting supports this by improving visibility along key access routes while keeping civil and environmental impacts low.

Part of The Spit’s Ongoing Transformation

This project contributes to a broader program of improvements across The Spit - including Muriel Henchman Park, the Marine Stadium Jetty and Pontoon, and the Seaway Promenade - that continue to enhance access, amenity and enjoyment of the area.

Completed on time and on budget, the Doug Jennings Park upgrade strengthens The Spit as a coastal destination that balances recreation, conservation and community access.
